DHAKA: Vatican Catholic Church Pope Francis arrived here Thursday (November 30) on a three-day state visit, with glad tidings of peace and harmony.
Leaving Naypyidaw of Myanmar, the plane carrying the pope landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 3:00pm.
President Abdul Hamid received Pope Francis at the airport.
The Pope was accorded a guard of honour upon the arrival.
From the airport, the Pope is scheduled to visit National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar to pay tribute to the memories of Liberation War martyrs of 1971, at 4:00pm.
After that, the highest Catholic priest will pay respect to the memories of Farther of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his portrait at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi-32.
In the evening, the Pope will meet with President M Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban.
Later, Pope Fancies will join a gathering at Bangabhaban Darbar hall attended by the Speaker, the Chief Justice, ministers, political leaders, members of civil society and diplomats.
On Friday (December 1), Pope Francis will join a mass prayer attended by the Catholics from Bangladesh Christian community, at Suhrawardy Udyan.
In the afternoon, Pope Francis will visit the Vatican Embassy (Apostolic Nunciature) in Dhaka’s Baridhara where the Pope will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Later in the day, the Pope will hold a meeting with Bishops of Bangladesh, at the garden of Arch Bishop's house.
On Saturday (December 2), Pope Francis will visit Tejgaon Mother Theresa House. The Pope will meet priests, religious and consecrated men and women, seminarians and novices in the church of the Holy Rosary in Tejgaon.
The Pope will deliver a speech before the youths in Notre Dame College in the capital at 3.20 pm. The Pope is scheduled to leave Dhaka at 5:00pm Saturday.
However, Pope Francis is the second Pope visiting Bangladesh. About 31 years ago, His Holiness Pope John Paul II officially visited Bangladesh, on November 19, 1986.
