India has reported its biggest spike of 49,310 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 12,87,945.

The country death toll from coronavirus also crossed 30,000 after 740 new fatalities.

As of now, there are 4,40,135 active cases in the country and more than 8 lakh people have recovered after getting infected. While cases are rising sharply in India, the fatality and recovery rate are improving, according to the government.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected with over 1.4 lakh active cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with nearly 53,000 active cases. Karnataka is also nearing 50,000 active cases after a recent surge of coronavirus infections in Bengaluru.

Andhra Pradesh has also seen a sharp rise in cases recently and currently has over 34,000 active cases. Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have also witnessed a significant jump in Covid cases recently and have 21,012 and 18,846 active cases respectively.

There has also been a considerable rise in the number of coronavirus infections in Bihar, which now has nearly 11,000 active cases. The state is struggling to cope with the sudden rise in cases due to the lack of medical infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Delhi has witnessed a remarkable recovery with 14,554 active cases and nearly 1.10 lakh recoveries.

With the number of cases rising in India’s rural belts, experts are worried that cases could explode in future due to lack of sanitation and healthcare facilities in such regions. They also feel that India’s Covid-19 situation is likely to get a lot worse if the cases keep rising in rural areas.

In a bid to slow down the rate of transmission, many states in India have currently re-imposed strict lockdowns in high-risk containment zones while others have imposed a complete lockdown again.
