BSMRSTU VC Nasir Uddin resigns

DHAKA: Dr Khondoker Nasir Uddin has resigned from the post of Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj amid students protest demanding his removal on allegation of irregularities and corruption.

He submitted his resignation to Abdullah Al Hasan Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (University) of the Ministry of Education, on Monday (September 30) afternoon. 

Abdullah Al Hasan Chowdhury said he handed over the resignation letter to Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.

Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni said, "We have received his resignation letter. Now, we are moving towards the legal process”.

Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Deputy Minister of Education told Banglanews that he no longer wants to remain in his post. We are reviewing the investigation report as soon as possible.

UGC recommends withdrawal of BSMRSTU VC 

Earlier on Sunday, probe body of University Grant Commission, in its report sent to the Ministry of Education, recommended withdrawal of the VC professor Dr Khondoker Nasir Uddin of BSMRSTU. 

On September 23, the UGC formed the five-member committee to investigate the situation of BSMRSTU as students of the university have been demonstrating since September 18, demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor for his alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities.

The committee has been asked to submit a report, after investigation all the facts about the actual events and current state of the student movement.

The committee went to the university on September 25 and 26 to conduct a thorough investigation and recorded the statements of teachers, staffers and staff of the university about the allegations if irregularities and corruption of VC Nasiruddin, the UGC said.

Students of the varsity have been staging their protest programme in front of the administrative buildings since September 21, demanding resignation of VC Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin bringing allegations against him of sexual harassment, nepotism in recruiting teachers.

The protesters brought 14 specific allegations against the VC Prof Nasir including sexual harassment, nepotism in recruiting teachers and employees and corruption in development projects.

Amid the ongoing protests for resignation of Vice Chancellor professor Dr Khondaker Nasir, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) declared a 15-day holiday starting from Sunday (September 21) on the occasion of Durga Puja.
