DHAKA UNIVERSITY: The 43rd death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is being observed Tuesday (Aug 27), the 12th Bhadra in Bangla calendar, across the country in a befitting manner.

The day’s programme has begun through placing of wreaths at the poet’s grave in the morning. Other programmes include Qurankhawani, offering Fateha, discussion meetings and cultural functions.

Dhaka University (DU) also has chalked out an elaborate programme marking the day.

The teachers, students and officials of the DU, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman, gathered at the poet’s mazar to place wreaths and offer Fateha there.

Later, teachers, students, officers and employees of the university brought out a procession on the campus after offering Fateha at the grave of the poet. A discussion has also been arranged on the campus.

Bangla Academy has arranged a solo lecture session on the poet, with National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman in the chair.

Central leaders of the Awami League placed a wreath at the poet’s grave and offer Fateha there.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Shishu Academy and Nazrul Academy are observing the day by holding separate programmes.

Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was born at Churulia in Bardhaman of West Bengal on 11 Joistha in Bengali year 1306 (May 24, 1899).

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought the poet to Dhaka from Kolkata in 1972. Bangabandhu also provided a residence for the family of the poet at the city’s Dhanmondi and took all out initiatives for his treatment.

The poet of equality and humanity, Nazrul was not only the symbol of struggle and equality but also a symbol of youthfulness and love.

Nazrul’s inspirational poems and songs inspired the freedom-loving people of the country towards the nation’s struggle for independence leading to the War of Liberation.
