UODA accolades Prof Dr Rahmatullah

DHAKA: University of Development Alternative (UODA) accoladed Professor Dr Mohammed Rahmatullah, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences and a veteran scientist for his scientific achievements for the last decade in the field of Life Sciences at the UODA auditorium in the capital.

State Minister and Chairman of University Grants Commission and the Ex-Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Professor Dr Emajuddin Ahamed, Vice-Chancellor of UODA, Ex-Vice Chancellor of University of Dhaka and Professor Mujib Khan, Founder-President of UODA also adorned the occasion.

The Faculty of Life Sciences also honored Professor Dr Mohammed Rahmatullah for his achievements.

A summary of his research achievements in the field of Life Sciences comprises the following: 387 (total number of publications); 307 (publications indexed in Google Scholar); 215 (publications indexed in SCOPUS); 58 (publications indexed in PubMed); 264 (total presentations in National and International Conferences); 4 (total number of Book Chapters) and 1 (International Patents).

On top of it from 2010 till 2013, he has been the top most research publication author from Bangladesh in SCOPUS (SCOPUS is the largest abstracting body in the world) abstracted journals.

Bangladesh Development Research Center (BDRC), a non-profit research organization published a report on Bangladeshi researchers, where Dr. Rahmatullah is among the top 64 researchers of the millennium in Bangladesh.  

He is the pioneer researcher in the field of the study with the Medicinal Plants of Bangladesh. He has Ethnomedicinal plant data base of more than 800 medicinal plants of Bangladesh surveyed on more than 30 tribal groups and 200 reports on folk-medicinal practitioners in almost all districts of Bangladesh.

His other research activities include studies on anti-diabetic, pain-relieving, and anti-cancer plants of Bangladesh along with famine food plants, functional food plants, and phytoremediating plants.  

His most promising research finding in recent times is an International Patent on plant based Anti-viral and Anti-Cancer drug that acts against H5N1 virus and cure Bird Flu and is also effective against pancreatic cancer. The drug works even better than Tamiflu® (Roche) against influenza in humans.

In addition, he is also the member, senior editor and chief editor of world renowned International Journals like Research Journal of Biotechnology, Journal of Research in Diabetes, Global Journal of Medicinal Plant Research, Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences and special issue of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine respectively.

In his statement, the Chief guest Professor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury strongly focused on the research activities at Universities and to discover different innovative ideas.

He added if we want lead the 21th century, every Universities of Bangladesh should more concentrate on research and learning from knowledge like UODA.

He mentioned that UODA has reached the top most landmark in research not only in Bangladesh but also recognized internationally.

He gave his thank to UODA and the Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammed Rahmatullah for his great contribution from the discoveries he made in UODA.

Moreover, he said the research would go for overcoming the problems in health sectors in Bangladesh.

In the program Vice Chancellor of UODA Professor Dr. Emajuddin Ahamed told that Universities are for education and learning knowledge and to learn knowledge research work is the main tool and pathway.
