Eco-friendly, sustainable production in fashion industry stressed Participants at the seminar

DHAKA: Speakers at a seminar held in Brac Centre Inn here Saturday (April 20) put emphasis on eco-friendliness and sustainable production in the country's fashion industry.

Fashion Revolution and ActionAid jointly organized the seminar titled "Voices and Solutions: Achieving Growth Through Sustainable Production and Consumption in the Fashion Industry", with Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam as the chief guest.

Giant Group Managing Director (MD) Faruq Hasan, New Age Group MD Asif Ibrahim, Ananta Group MD and BGMEA Director Sharif Zahir and QTex Solutions Ltd MD Tahura Khanom addressed the seminar.

ActionAid Bangladesh Country Director Farah Kabir moderated the seminar where Fashion Revolution Country Coordinator Nawshin Khair presented the key desertion.

At present, the world has a fashion market worth almost $3 trillion, said the speakers.

Fashion industry is the world's second largest industry which is responsible for emission of 20% waste water and 10% Carbon dioxide.  

In fashion industry, major 85% waste return to nature as only 15% wastes are recyclable.

Greenhouse gas and waste emission will increase by 60% by 2030, said Nawshin Khair, citing report of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

Therefore, pursuing the sustainable fashion industry is urgent for sake of reducing the harmful impacts. 

Mayor Atiqul Islam called on everyone to come forward to face the challenges in waste management.
