Share scam: 3 officials of Mark Bangladesh get jail-terms

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Sunday (June 24) sentenced three officials including the Chairman of Mark Bangladesh Shilpa & Engineering Limited to five years in jail each, in a case filed over a share market scandal.

Besides, the company was fined Tk 50 lakh.

Judge Akbar Ali Sheikh of the Special Tribunal on Share Market announced the verdict.

The convicts are-- Chairman & Managing Director Imam Mulkutur Rahman, Vice-Chairman Abdul Hye, and Director Salma Akter.

Of them, Imam Mulkutur Rahman died while Abdul Hye and Akter have been absconding.

Mulkutur and Salma were fined Tk 50 lakh each. They have to serve more six months of jail, if the fine isn’t paid, BSEC (Bangladesh Securities & Exchange Commission) lawyer Advocate Masud Rana told Banglanews Sunday.

The court earlier issued arrest warrants against the trio on February 9, 2017.

The then BSEC Deputy Director Ahmed Hossain, as a plaintiff, filed the case with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in 2000 accusing Mark Bangladesh Shilpa & Engineering Limited and four persons over a share scam in 1999.

The case was transferred to the tribunal on November 6 in 2016.
