Unproductive productivity!

DHAKA: The National Productivity Organization (NPO) has apparently turned into an ‘unproductive’ organization in the last 21 years without any job.

Established in 1989, the NPO aims to increasing the productivity of the public and private industries and factories under the auspices of the Industries Ministry.

In the last 21 years, it arranged only seven meetings while the last one took place five years ago.

Over the last five years, it did not even see implementation of any previous decision, competent sources said.

Dr Nazrul Islam, Director of NPO, however, said they were not sitting idle, but continued working as per previous decisions.

The NPO is supposed to sit at least once a year.

Dr Islam said various reasons caused delay for a meeting. However, it works according to the policy of the Asian Productivity Organization, he added.

Now, its 8th meeting is scheduled for Wednesday after the last one that had taken place on July 20, 2005.

The NPO has a 37-member National Productivity Council (NPC) for who helps and advises its functions. All of them were invited for the meeting.

The council included representatives of government and private industries, representatives of labourer organizations, educationist and technologists apart from secretaries of nine ministries.

Industries Ministry sources said the meeting will discuss holding a national conference, observing National Productivity Day, setting up MPO Bhaban and divisional offices.

The meeting is likely to decide introducing a National Productivity Award.
