TEA HEAVEN RESORT (SREEMANGAL): Save the Heritage and Environment chief coordinator Abdul Hye Al Hadi said it is a must to keeping the historical background of Sylhet for the development of tourism in this part of the country.
“Puranic texts say there were people in Sylhet around 4,000 years ago. Besides, archaeologists have unearthed 3,000 years old megalithic stones from Jaintiapur.”
He also mentioned about two Shakipeeths, one is at Lobhachhara and another is in a tea garden in Sylhet Sadar where an Indian high commissioner and Bhutan’s ambassador to Bangladesh visited.
“Those places are in impassable areas. If highlighted, those places can be good tourist spots,” he added.
Assistant forest conservator of Moulvibazar range Tabibur Rahman also opined against taking steps that would have pernicious effects on forest environment and ecology.
He also asked ministries and government departments for coordination with forest department before infrastructural development works.
Mentioning that the number of tourists at Lawachara National Park has crossed 3.50 lakh, Tabibur Rahman also said they had earned around Tk 26 lakh by selling tickets in 2013-14 fiscal.
“We are not against tourists but we want a system. The concept of eco-tourism has to be put into work,” he added.
He also asked the authorities to include local people in their plan.
Saying that there is no alternative of developed communication system, SUST assistant professor Mejbah Uddin Ahmed said non-stop train between Dhaka-Sylhet is necessary for the development of tourism here.
