KHULNA:  A district court has awarded death penalty to a man for killing a woman in Dighalia upazila of the district.

Judge Mashiur Rahman of district and sessions judge’s court of Khulna delivered the verdict on Wednesday (June 12).

Following announcement of the verdict, the convict-Rafiqul Islam-was taken to the prison. Rafiqul Islam was a replacement worker of Crescent Jute Mills.

Lawyer for the state Kazi Abu Shahin said Rafiqul Islam went to Mohammad Jinnat Ali Sheikh’s house on September 17 of 2014. Later, Rafiqul strangled Jinnat Ali’s wife Halima Begum to death after she had refused to lend him Taka 5000.

On that day, Halima’s husband filed a case with Dighalia police station.

Investigating officer of the case Sheikh Lutfar Rahman as well as sub-inspector (SI) of Dighalia Police Station said charge sheet was submitted on April 28 of 2015.

Out of 27 witnesses, 25 gave testimony to the court.
