3 'drug traders' killed in 'gunfights'

DHAKA: Three suspected drug traders, including a yaba kingpin, were killed in separate “gunfights” with police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in Cox's Bazar and Dinajpur early Friday (May 31).

In Cox’s Bazar, Haji Saiful Karim, suspected leader of a yaba traders’ gang, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila early in the morning.

Md Fakhruzzaman, assistant sub inspector of Teknaf police station, told Banglanews that the gunfight took place in sadar union area under the Teknaf police station at about 2:30am.

Police said Saiful is a listed drug trader and yaba kingpin. Police conducted a drive in Keruntoli area to hold him on Thursday night. Saiful’s gang members opened fire to police, and police also fired back, which left Saiful dead on the spot.

Moreover, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a 'gunfight' with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Gafur Project area in Teknaf upazila in early hours.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Lt Colonel Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan, commanding officer of BGB-2, told Banglanews that being tipped off that a group of drug peddlers would smuggle a big consignment of yaba tablets from Myanmar through the area a team of BGB took position there at night.

At that time, some people intruded into Bangladesh by wooden boat. Sensing the presence of BGB, the drug traders opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, BGB rescued a bullet-hit body and recovered 110,000 Yaba tablets, a machete after searching the boat.

BGB claimed that two BGB men Lance Naik Md Jahirul islam and Sepoy Md Jabbirul suffered injuries during the gunfight.

The process gets underway to file case in this connection.

In another gunfight, a suspected drug trader was killed in an alleged gunfight with BGB troops along Hili border n the Hakimpur upazila around 2:00am.

Deceased Delwar Hossian, 41, was earlier arrested by BGB men from  Nandipur village  of the upazila along with 958 bottles of phensedyl.

The gunfight took place when a BGB patrolling team along with Delwar went to Chengram border Point as per information of the arrestee to stop a consignment of yaba, according to a press release of Joypurhat BGB-20. 

Later, BGB members recovered the body of Delwar after other drug peddlers managed to flee the scene.

Nearly 300 bottles of phensedyl and three machetes were recovered from the spot after the gunfight.
