BNP needed for competitive polls: Quader

DHAKA: Dismissing the notion that ruling Awami League will be glad to see the opposition BNP pulling out from election, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader said his party rather wants inclusive and competitive polls with BNP’s participation in it.

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, made the remarks to reporters while visiting a BRTC mobile court in front of Radisson Blu Hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday noon (February 13).

In response to a query about whether AL is trying to break up BNP, the minister said, “I don’t BNP to break down as it is one of the large and major political parties in Bangladesh.”

Blaming BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman for their own organizational crisis, Quader claimed that for BNP’s own party men are enough for the break up.

Earlier on Feb 8, A Dhaka court sentenced five years imprisonment to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. She is currently in Dhaka central jail.

Later BNP secretary general Fakhrul said BNP will not join polls keeping its party chairperson in jail.

In response to Fakhrul’s remark, Quader said, “The government can’t do anything about Khaleda Zia’s release. She was sent to jail by court and may be released by the Appellate division. It is completely depending on the court.”

“But we want a major party like BNP for contesting with us in the upcoming general election. There is no fun if there is no competition in an election”, he added.
