Govt colluded to impede DNCC by-polls: BNP

DHAKA: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the government has foiled the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-polls by colluding with the Law Ministry.

He made the remark to reporters before placing floral wreath to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s tomb in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Friday morning (January 19).

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, along with other party leaders, went to pay tribute to the founder Ziaur Rahman on the 82nd birth anniversary.

Fakhrul said the government stayed the polls after anticipating their sure defeat in the outcome. It is a complete failure of the Election Commission (EC). New unions were included in city but their boundaries were not determined and voter lists were not ensured. It clearly proves the incompetence of EC.

Fakhrul also said the polls won’t be accepted if all political parties don’t get a level playing field.
