Khaleda gets bail in two cases

DHAKA: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has surrendered before a special court and received bail in two graft cases.

The BNP chief appeared before the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5, the makeshift court built on the premises of Madrasa-e-Alia Dhaka in city’s Bakshibazar, after 11:00 am on Tuesday (December 05).

She sought bail in the graft cases and the court accepted her plea. The BNP chief has also been allowed to continue her defense statement prior to the opening arguments.

She began giving her defense statement in the Zia Orphanage Trust Graft case immediately after the decision.

Earlier on November 30, the same court issued arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia after canceling her ad-interim bail as she failed to appear before it on that day. BNP chief did not go to the court due to hartal, called by some left-leaning parties.

On October 19, the special court granted the BNP chief the ad-interim bail after she surrendered before it and sought bail.

On August 8 in 2011, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station in the city, accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of raising funds for the trust from unknown sources through power abuse.

On July 3 in 2008, the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna Police Station, accusing Khaleda Zia, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that was received as grants for orphans via a foreign bank.
