Comilla Mayor discharged from graft charges

DHAKA: A Dhaka court has discharged Mayor of Comilla City Corporation Monirul Hoque Shakoo, also a BNP leader, from a corruption case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2008.

Judge Shamim Ahemed of the Special Judge’s Court-8 of Dhaka passed the order on Tuesday (November 21).

The court was scheduled to frame charge in the case. But Shakoo’s lawyer Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder filed a petition for discharging the Comilla Mayor from the corruption charge.

Masud Ahmed Talukder said that the court discharged the mayor on the ground that the charges brought against him were not proved.

On January 7 in 2008, the ACC filed the case against Shakoo and his wife with Ramna Police Station in the city on charge of their involvement in amassing Tk 4.57 crore through illegal means and concealing information about wealth worth over Tk 1.12 crore from the commission.

In April in 2017, Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla of the Senior Special Judge's Court accepted charges brought against Shakoo in the case. The court had, however, dismissed the charges against Shakoo's wife.

On November 13, the High Court rejected a petition filed by Shakoo seeking its directive to transfer the case to a Comilla court from the Special Judge's Court-8 of Dhaka.
