Sylhet-Teknaf road march for Rohingyas foiled by police

SYLHET: The Sylhet-Teknaf road march called for protesting genocide of Rohingyas and demanding atrocities by Myanmar in Rakhine State was foiled by police on Thursday (September 21).

‘Humanity for Rohingya Bangladesh’, a platform floated for raising voice for repressed Rohingyas, called the road-march program.

The marchers left Sylet city for Teknaf at about 12:00 pm led by chairman of the platform Advocate Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury, a former MP of Sunamganj.

Police obstructed the caravan of road march’s vehicles at noon when it reached Rashidpur on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Sylhet.

The organizers of the road march tried to advance forward but failed due to police obstruction. Later, Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury announced the closure of road march program.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Dakshin Surma police station Khairul Fazal told Banglanews that police stopped the marchers at Rashidpur, as the road march was not permitted. Additional police were deployed at Rashidpur from morning.

Earlier, eminent Islamic scholar Allama Adbul Momin Imambari inaugurated the road march program at Humayun Rashid Chatwar of Sylhet.

According to the earlier announcement, the road-march was scheduled to reach Teknaf on Friday (September 22) covering Habiganj, Comilla, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. The marchers were also scheduled to hold roadside rallies in different places of the route.
