BNP seeks army deployment at Rohingya refugee camps

DHAKA: BNP demanded army deployment at the refugee camp areas in Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh for Rohingyas who fled Myanmar to avoid persecution upon them especially in turbulent Rakhine state following an upsurge last month.

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas raised the demand while addressing a press conference in BNP’s Naya Paltan Party Office Sunday (September 17).

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also attended the briefing which was arranged to react for being obstructed while the party intended to distribute relief materials among the refugees recently.

BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, BNP Chairperson’s advisor Ataur Rahman Dhali, Mir Shorfot Ali Shopu, were among others, present there.

Mirza Abbas said, “We didn’t see any relief distributing promptness by the government in the refugee camps in Ukhia of Cox’s Bazar. We aren’t acknowledged that any unit or associate bodies of Awami League have distributed relief there.”

Alleging that they have heard the ruling party men are snatching belongings from the refugees, Mirza Abbas said, “We demand army deployment in the Rohingya refugee camps, considering the situation regarding relief distribution and rehabilitation of the Rohingyas.”

However, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called for national unity rather than blame-game or using the issue for political gain.
