Moudud’s graft case to continue, HC orders to transfer court

DHAKA:  The High Court has cleared the way for the trial court to continue trial proceedings against BNP’s standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed in a corruption case filed for hiding wealth.

The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath passed the order on Monday (July 25) after holding hearing on a petition filed by the BNP leader.

The HC bench also ordered to transfer the trial court in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan moved on behalf of the ACC, while Barrister Moudud Ahmed moved for him. Barrister Abdullah-al-Masud helped Barrister Moudud in the court.

The ACC lawyer said that there is no legal bar for the lower court to continue trial proceedings against Barrister Moudud Ahmed in the corruption case following the HC order.

The ACC on September 16 in 2007 filed the case with city’s Gulshan police station accusing Barrister Moudud Ahmed, also a former law minister of BNP-led government, of possessing wealth beyond his known income sources and withholding information about his assets.

Special judge’s court-6 of Dhaka is scheduled to record statements from the witnesses of the case on July 26.

A Dhaka court on June 21 framed charges against Barristewr Moudud Ahmed in the case.

According to the case statement, Moudud Ahmed showed movable and immovable properties worth over Tk 13.23 crore in his account of wealth submitted to the ACC on July 23 in 2007.

On May 15 in 2008, the ACC pressed charges against Moudud in the case alleging that he (Moudud) amassed wealth worth over Tk 7.38 crore through illegal means and concealed information about wealth worth over Tk 4.40 crore from the commission.
