Order on Khaleda’s appeal in Barapukuria coalmine case May 28

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed May 28 to deliver order on the leave to appeal filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for scrapping the trial proceedings of Barapukuria coalmine corruption case against her.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, fixed the date after completion of hearing on Monday noon (May 22).

Senior lawyer of Supreme Court took part in the hearing for Khaleda Zia, while Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Khaleda Zia filed the leave to appeal petition with the Supreme Court on June 26 in 2016.

Earlier the BNP chief filed a writ petition challenging the High Court verdict that on September 16 in 2015 cleared the way for a lower court to run the trial proceedings in the case.

Khaleda Zia’s writ petition was rejected. Later, she filed the leave to appeal.

The ACC on February 26 in 2008 filed the case against 16 persons, including Khaleda Zia and ten members of her Cabinet.

The charge-sheet in the case was submitted on October 5 in 2008.
