'Haor trouble uncovers government failure' BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu addressing a human chain in city formed by Bangladesh NAP demanding declaration of haor calamity as national disaster

DHAKA: BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has accused the government of maltreating the flood-hit people of haor areas.

Addressing a human chain on Saturday (April 29), he said that the naked history of government’s failure has been reflected in the troubles and miseries of the haor areas.

“The horrific humanitarian disaster has shown the failure of the government with finger in the eyes. The government is trying to avoid the helpless haor men even after the human catastrophe of memories,” said the BNP leader.

Dhaka city unit of the Bangladesh National Awami Party (Bangladesh NAP) arranged the human chain program in front of the National Press Club in the city in the morning demanding declaration of the haor calamity as national disaster and taking immediate step to save the affected people.

The city unit president Shahidunnabi Dablu presided over the program, while Bangladesh NAP secretary general M Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan, chairman of Bangladesh Jatiya Dal Syed Ehsanul Huda, secretary general of NPP Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa, vice chairman of Bangladesh Kalyan Party Shahidur Rahman Tamanna, NDP leader Manzur Hossain Isa and NAP leader Principal Nazrul Islam also addressed it, among others.

Shamsuzzaman Dudu alleged that the government is not declaring the flood-hit haors ‘disaster zone’, as the failure and corruption of the government will be proved. The Awami League men are working as contractors in the haor areas through tender. The flood adversely affected the haors due to the corruption of the ruling party men, he added.

He demanded of the government to declare the haor belt as ‘disaster zone’ immediately.
M Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan expressed dissatisfaction over the poor activities of the government to help the flood-hit haor people. He said that the government’s negligence in this regard in not acceptable.
