7 injured in BCL-police clash at CU, exam suspended

CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY: At least seven people, including five cops, were injured in a clash between police and Chittagong University (CU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the campus on Thursday (April 20).

The injured are sub-inspector (SI) of Hathazari police station Mohsin Ali, constables Shariful Islam, Rafiqul Islam, Anwar Hossain and Imam Hossain. The two other injured are reportedly activists of the BCL.

Sources from the university said that the clash ensued over a previous enmity between Mahbubul Haque Shahin, leader of a group of BCL, and Abdullah Al Kaiser, a final-year honor’s student at the department of Communication and Journalism, also a BCL activist.

Earlier, the university authorities expelled Kaiser for two years on charge of attacking Mahbubul Haque Shahin in December in 2016.

Kaiser went to the campus to take part in examination of Honor’s final year on Thursday. However, Kaiser was not enrolled for the examination.

As the news spread, BCL leaders and activists took position on the campus. Later, police charged baton to disperse them. Being agitated, they closed the main entrance of the university and cut the hose pipe of shuttle train.

Kaiser was a follower of Mizanur Rahman Bipul, a BCL leader in CU.

In-charge of CU police camp Aktaruzzaman confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Chairman of communication and journalism department Abul Kalam Azad told Banglanews that Honor’s final examination of course-401, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed.
