MEHERPUR: A district court has sentenced four people to life term imprisonment for killing former panel mayor of Meherpur municipality Mizanur Rahman Ripon in 2011.
 
Additional District and Session Judge Mohammad Nurul Islam handed down the verdict on Monday (Sept 17).
 
The convicts are—Abdul Halim, son of one Isahak Ali, Radil Islam Akali, son of one Amzad Hossain of Gorosthanpara, Masud Rana, son of Sekendar Ali of thanapara in Gangni upazila and Laltu Hossain, son of Arshad Ali of Olipara. Of them, Masud and Laltu are absconding.
 
The court also fined them Tk one lakh each, in default, two more years of rigorous imprisonment.
 
According to the prosecution, some miscreants swooped on the business establishment of Mizanur Rahman Ripon, a Jubo league leader and also the former panel mayor of Meherpur municipality and opened fire on him on April 1 in 2011, leaving him injured. 

Later, Ripon succumbed to his injuries on April 8. Victim’s father filed a case with Sadar police station against five people.
