DHAKA: A contempt petition was filed against Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University DR. Md. Akhtaruzzaman and two others for not taking steps to hold Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election as per High Court order.
The two others are Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani, and Treasurer Dr. Kamal Uddin of Dhaka University
Advocate Manzil Murshid, the lawyer on behalf of those who filed the writ petition to High Court over DUCSU election earlier, filed the contempt petition with the concerned branch of High Court on Wednesday (September 12), as he claimed.
Earlier, Advocate Manzil Murshid sent a notice through registry mail on Tuesday (September 04).
After sending the notice on Tuesday, Manzil Murshid said in a notification: “A contempt of court petition will be filed with the High Court against the three persons if DUCSU election is not held within the next 7 days as per court order.”
“Following 7 days of the notice, reply to the notice came from one of them, but nothing about elections steps was mentioned. That’s why this allegation was made,” Manzil Murshid said on Wednesday.
On March 11, 2012, advocate Manzil Murshid sent a legal notice to VC, Proctor, and Treasurer to take steps to hold DUCSU election.
But, having gained no reply from university authorities, the writ petition was filed for students that year.
However, on January 17, 2018, High Court directed Dhaka University authorities to take steps to hold an election DUCSU within 6 months
