Govt working to make roads, highways safe

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government is working to ensure safety on various roads and highways of the country.

The Premier made the remarks while inaugurating 23 bridges in Feni’s Fatehpur and on Dhaka-Tangail highway through video conferencing from her official residence Ganabhaban on Tuesday afternoon (August 14).

Sheikh Hasina said the construction work of Joydebpur-Chandra-Tangail-Elenga 4-lane highway is in progress under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEK) Program. Sub-regional communication is being built under this project and people of remote areas will be the beneficiary of it.

From now on in all highway projects, extra lanes, for local vehicular movement, are being constructed alongside the highways so that union-to-union communication remains undisturbed, she said.

“While building the Bangabandhu Bridge, we first created a small lane for small vehicle plying. We had face difficulties in making the extra lane but our army engineering battalion did it fast and efficiently,” the premier added.
