HC order compensating Tareque Masud’s family challenged

DHAKA: A writ petition has been filed by bus owners challenging the High Court order that directed authorities concerned to pay Tk 4.61 crore as compensation to the family of filmmaker Tareque Masud who was killed in a road crash in 2011.

Chamber Judge Hasan Foyez Siddique on Sunday (July 22) fixed October 8 for a full bench hearing on the petition.

Senior lawyer kamrul Huq Siddique moved for the bus owners in court. 

Earlier on December 3 last year, An HC bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Qazi Md. Ijarul Haque Akond ordered authorities concerned to pay Tk 4.61 crore as compensation to the family of filmmaker Tareque Masud.

The case filed by Tareque Masud’s family members.  

After the verdict, Barrister Sara Hossain, lawyer of Tareque Masud’s family, said, “The High Court ordered to pay Tk 4,61,75,452 to the family as compensation within three months. The driver will have to pay Tk 30lakh, Insurance company to pay Tk 80,000 and the owners to pay the rest amount.”

The trial of the case started in High Court on Aug 13 in 2016. Tareque Masud’s wife Catherine asked for Tk 7,76,25,452 as compensation in the testimony. 

On February 13, 2013, the family members of the deceased filed two cases for compensation against bus owners, driver and Insurance Company under Section 128 of Motor Vehicle Ordinance in Manikganj.

On August 13, 2011, five people, including filmmaker Tarek Masud and ATN News’s CEO (CEO) Mishuk Munir, were killed in a sudden road crash on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Joka area of Ghior Upazila.
