CHANDPUR: A district court on Tuesday (July 17) sentenced death penalty to the husband and life term jail to his uncle for killing a housewife over dowry in Chandpur.

Judge Md. Julfikar Ali Khan of Chandpur District and Sessions Judge’s court passed the verdict with Tk 10,000 fine for each convict. 

The death row convict is identified as Ershadullah, son of one Ruhul Amin of Sadipura village in Kachua upazila of Chandpur. 

The Ershad’s uncle, who was sentenced to life term, is identified as Abu Taher Munshi, son of one Abdul Khalek Munshi of the same house. 

According to case statement, Ershad got married to Shahinur Begum, daughter of Shahidullah Gazi of a nearby village in the same upazila, on January 26 in 2015. Shahinur’s father at the time promised to give Tk 2.5 lakh dowry to husband. Later Ershad and his family used to torture Shahinur over the dowry payment. On February 28 in 2015, the couple argued as usual and at one point Ershad and his uncle strangled Shahinur to death.

Later victim’s father filed a case with Kachua police station.
