DHAKA: The government is set to construct the first ever 600MW combined cycle LNG-based (Liquefied Natural Gas) power plant in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

The people concerned said Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Ltd (CPGCBL) will implement the project. Land acquisition, development and feasibility testing works for the project have already been taken in hand.

Sources said CPGCBL sent the project to the Industry and Energy Division of Planning Commission for final approval. The total expenditure of the project has been estimated at Tk 438.47 crore.

Begum Shamima Nargis, member (secretary) of the Planning Commission’s Industry and Energy Division, said various initiatives have been taken to meet the demand of electricity in the country. The LNG-based power plant will be built in this continuation. LNG import will increase in future and more electricity will be produced using this liquefied gas.

She told Banglanews that CPGCBL submitted the project file to the planning commission for approval. The evaluation committee already held a meeting on the project and more meeting will follow before giving final approval.

It has been known that the government will construct 8.5 km long pipe line to supply LNG at the power plant. A total of 12.60 acres of land will acquired for building the pipeline. Japanese MITSUI and Company Limited will assist CPGCBL in implementing the project.

Source said the government is aiming to supply electricity to each and every house by 2021. The LNG power plant is part of that mission. The government has already been able to produce 15,000MW of power and targets have been set to produce 40000MW of power by 2030 and 60,000MW by 2040.

Officials said the goal is to generate 25 percent power using domestic and imported LNG for energy diversification in power production. That is why the import of LNG as an alternative source of energy and LNG-based power plant are being prioritized.

Source also said government hopes to generate 8 percent LNG-based electricity out of total produced power by 2021. It will be increased to 27 percent by 2030 and 51 percent by 2041.
