War crimes trial against 9 M’singh men begins

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal ordered to start trial by framing charges against nine persons of Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh over their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

A 3-member tribunal led by Justice M Shahinur Islam passed the order Sunday (July 15).

The tribunal fixed September 19 for taking deposition and introductory speech.

Trial of the nine persons is going to be started through forming charges, said lawyers Sunday.  

The state earlier submitted formal charges against the nine persons on June 19, 2017.

Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad moved for the state and Advocate Abdus Subhan Tarafder moved for the accused, to direct the lawsuit. 
 
The investigation agency of the ICT published the final report of the nine accused on March 29, 2017.

Seven of the accused are behind the bars. They are—Shamser Fakir, 66, Md Abdus Salam, 75, Suruj Ali Fakir, 62, Md Joyen Uddin, 60, Md Abdur Rahim alias Nuru BSC, 67, Md Jalal Uddin, 59, and Md Rostom Ali, 70.

The two others—Fazlul Haque, 59k, and Shamsul Haque, have been absconding.
 
Eight types of charges including murder, rape, arson, detention, torture and mass killing were brought against the accused.

However, sources said that the accused include supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami, Muslim League and Awami League.
