Teknaf councilor among 10 ‘drug dealers’ killed in 10 dists

DHAKA: At least ten suspected drug peddlers including a councillor of Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Municipality were killed in reported shootouts with the law enforcers as the anti-narcotics crackdown continues across the country.  

The incidents happened in different times between Saturday (May 26) late hours to early of Sunday (May 27).

Banglanews correspondents from the respective districts reported the incidents.

In Bagerhat, suspected drug dealer Mitul Biswas, 45, was killed in a reported shootout with police, at Chinguri Mochondopur area under Chitalmari upazila.

He was accused in 22 cases, on charge of drug peddling, said police.

A shutter gun, bullets, hemp and yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

In Khulna, suspected drug dealer Abul Kalam was killed in a shootout with police at Barakpur Siddikpasha Kheya area under Dighinala upazila, around 3am.

He was accused in five cases, filed over drug peddling.

In Cox’s Bazar, Teknaf Municipality Councillor Ekramul Haque, 46, was killed in a reported shootout with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in Noakhaliapara area besides Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive Road.

The deceased was elected councilor three times consecutively from ward no-3. 

He was the former president of Teknaf upazila Jubo League, president of Teknaf Bus Station Businessmen’s Association, and former convener of Teknaf Microbus Workers’ Union. He was accused in a case filed over trading yaba pills in 2008, said police.

A pistol, a LG gun, bullets and yaba pills were recovered from the spot, said police.

In Kushtia, suspected drug dealer Halim Mondol, 35, was killed in a reported shootout with police. Police said that four of them too were injured in the shootout.

Police recovered arms, bullets and yaba pills from the spot.

In Mymensingh, a suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported shootout with the members of Detective Branch (DB) police, at Morakhola area of the town, around 1:30am Sunday. He couldn’t be identified immediately.

In Meherpur, one Hafizul Islam Hafi, 45, was killed in a reported shootout among the drug peddlers at Gazabaria Bathan ground under Gangni upazila, around 1:30am Sunday. 

The deceased is son of Freedom Fighter Harez Uddin, in Gangni Degree College area.

In Noakhali, suspected drug dealer Md Hasan Prakash alais Yaba Hasan, 35, was killed in a reported shootout with police, in Sonaimuri upazila, around 12:30am.

Three police members were injured in the shootout.

Police seized arms, bullets and yaba pills from the spot.

In Thakurgaon, suspected drug dealer Rafikul Islam alias Taleban, 55, was killed in a reported shootout with the law enforcers at Bhournia Mirdangi area under Ranishankail upazila, at the early hours of Sunday. 

In Chattogram, suspected drug dealer Raihan Uddin, 28, was killed in a reported shootout with police at Noralia Beibandh area of Sitakunda upazila, around 1am.

A gun, a dagger, a knife, bullets and yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

In Chandpur, suspected drug dealer Selim, 37, was killed in a reported shootout with police, at Hazir Don area in South Chandpur, around 3am.

Two local made arms, bullets, cartridges and yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

The deceased was accused in seven cases filed on charge of trading drug.
