UN to honor 4 Bangladeshi fallen peacekeepers International Day of Peacekeepers

DHAKA: The United Nations will honour 129 peacekeepers and civilian personnel, including four Bangladeshi peacekeepers, who lost their lives during peace missions during 2017.

The four Bangladeshi fallen peacekeepers are Md Abdur Rahim who died Jan 5 in 2017 while serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and Md Monowar Hossain, Sergeant Md Altaf Hossain, Lance Corporal Md Jakirul Alam Sarkar who lost their lives on Sep 24 in 2017 while serving with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

UN Secretary-General António Guterres will honor them at a ceremony marking the International Day of Peacekeepers at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday (May 29). 

UN Secretary-General António Guterres will preside over the ceremony, where he will confer Dag Hammarschold Medal to honour the 129 fallen peacekeepers.

Bangladesh is the second largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping mission. It currently deploys more than 6,990 military and police personnel to the UN operations.
