‘Mermaid baby’ dies after birth in Tangail The mermaid baby

TANGAIL: A woman shocked doctors by giving birth to a “mermaid baby", but finally lost it just two and half hours later.

Marjina Begum, wife of farmer Anisur Rahman, hailing from Bagherbari village under Sakhipur upazila, gave birth to the abnormal child in Life Care Clinic and Nursing Home on Sunday night (May 20).

The baby was born with Sirenomelia, alternatively known as Mermaid syndrome which is a rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, giving them the appearance of a mermaid's tail.

The baby had normal formation in upper part of the body but below the waist its legs were fused together. The lower part was not developed completely. The baby’s gender could not be established due to its fused legs.

“In general, a child, like this, is born in a lakh,” said Abdus Satthar, doctor of the clinic, to Banglanews.
