DHAKA: Bangladesh is set to buy 10 metre-gauge locomotives from South Korea with an aim to develop country’s railway infrastructure. 

Bangladesh Railway, in presence of Rail Minister Mujibul Haque, signed a deal with South Korean company Hyunday Rotem at rail office on Thursday (May 17).

Bangladesh Railway additional director general (Rolling Stock) Md. Shahsuzzaman and Hyundai Rotem director (Global Rail) Quang Kun Un signed the contract. 

According to the contract, Hyunday will deliver 10 locomotives within 24 months at the cost of Tk 297,63,30,560.

At the accord signing ceremony, rail minister said Bangladesh railway is suffering shortage of locomotives. Most of its locomotives have expired and we need more engines for railway. 

The minister also said government will buy a total of 70 locomotives from Hyundai Rotem. Discussion is underway to sign contract on 60 other locomotives.

“Currently there are 270 coaches are available in our rail squad and another 250 coaches are under construction”, he added.
