Lightning kills 8 in 6 dists

DHAKA: Eight persons were killed after thunderbolts struck them in Habiganj, Naogaon, Meherpur, Satkhira, Kishoreganj, and Netrokona districts on Thursday (May 10).

In Habiganj, two persons including a school girl were killed in lightening strikes in Baniachong upazila of the district at noon.

The deceased were identified as Tania Akter, 15, daughter of Jahir Mia of Satamukha village of Sujatpur union, and Mizanur Rahman, 18, son of Rahim Mia of Daulatpur union of the same upazila.

Tania died when she came out of the house to bring something while the farmer Mizanur received a thunder bolt when he was cutting paddy in the field. The deceased family will be given Tk 20,000 each from upazila administration, according to Baniachong Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md Mamun khandaker.

In Naogaon, a man, identified as Firoj Hossen, 33, son of late Nijam uddin, hailed from Haripur village under Amoir union of Patnitala upazila, was killed in a lightening strike while he was cutting paddy, according to Majharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Patnitala upazila.

In Meherpur, a farmer died after being struck by a thunder bolt in Mohammadpur village under Motmura union of Gangni upazila of the district, around 9:30 am.

He was identified as Felu Joardar, 55, from Mohamadpur village.

In Satkhira, lightning bolts killed two persons and burnt two others in Shyamnagar Upazila of the district. The deceased could not be identified.

In Kishoreganj, a female worker was critically injured when a bolt struck her while working outside. After transporting her to Nikli upazila health complex, doctors declared her dead on arrival. 

The dead woman was named as Momena Khatun, 33, daughter of Kalu Miah, from Goradiya village of Singpur union of the upazila.

In Netrokona, a child was struck dead in Barhatta upazila of Netrokona.
