PM urges Australia to keep up pressure on Myanmar Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

SYDNEY: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged Australian government to keep the pressure unobstructed on Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

Sheikh Hasina made the call during a meet with Australian Foreign Minister Juile Bishop met her in Sydney.

The premier also sought humanitarian support for the Rohingya refugees during their stay in Bangladesh. 

She arrived in Sydney on Friday morning (April 27) on a three-day official visit to Australia, to join the Global Summit of Women.

Juile Bishop was keen to know about her country's role to resolve the Rohingya crisis, said Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque while briefing reporters after the meeting.

“The Prime Minister called for continuous pressure on Myanmar in addition to extending support to the distressed Rohingyas,” he said.

Citing that an agreement has been signed for repatriation of the Rohingyas, Sheikh Hasina said: “They (Myanmar) don't deny of the pact, but are not implementing the agreement.”

The Australian foreign Minister lauded Sheikh Hasina for her humanitarian support to the Rohingya refugees. 

“Australia remains very forcefully on the issue beside Bangladesh,” she said.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, PMO Secretary Sajjadul Hasan, Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia Sufiur Rahman were present.
