DHAKA: Md Abdul Hamid has been sworn in as the President of Bangladesh for a second consecutive term.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered his oath of office at the Bangabhaban Darbar Hall around 7:45pm on Tuesday evening (April 24). 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, chief justice, former presidents, judges, members of the cabinet, lawmakers, senior politicians, diplomats and other distinguished personalities are expected to attend the ceremony.
 
On February 7, Hamid was re-elected as the country's president for a second term.

On 14 March, 2013, Hamid took the responsibility of president in-charge when the then president Md Zillur Rahman was undergoing treatment in Singapore. After his death, Hamid became the acting president on 20 March, 2013. Later, he was elected the president on 22 April that year.

A veteran politician, Hamid was born on January 1, 1944, at Kamalpur in Kishoreganj's Mithamain upazila, according to the Bangabhaban website.

He started his political career in 1959 by joining the Chhatra League. He joined the Awami League in 1969. Hamid directly participated in the Liberation War.

In the National Assembly Election of 1970, Hamid was elected as a junior-most member from Mymensingh-18 constituency.

Father of three sons and a daughter, Hamid was elected MP for six times. He became the speaker in the ninth parliament.

For his outstanding contribution to the Liberation War, Hamid was conferred the Independence Award-2013.
