MANIKGANJ: A police man in Manikganj, who jumped into a river while chasing a convicted criminal on Thursday evening, was found dead.

A diving team of the Fire Service recovered the body from Kaliganga river in Manikganj on Friday noon (April 20).

The deceased was identified as Shahinur Rahman, son of one Wahidur Rahman of Goailbari village in Ashulia upazila of Dhaka. He left behind a kid and pregnant wife.

Shahinur had been working as a cop in Manikganj sadar police station.

Manikganj sadar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Rakibuzzaman told Banglanews that Shahinur was part of police drive to detain a convict, Abdus Salam, from Purba Giland village in Ghior upazila.

After the arrest was made, the convict jumped into Kaliganga river in an effort to flee from police in Joynagar area. Shahinur also dived into river to catch the convict. Later none of them were found as there were lots of hyacinth floating on the river.
