2 DU students among 3 ‘detained’ by RAB, released DU students gather on the road to protest the incident

DHAKA UNIVERSITY: Three students including two of Dhaka University, who were said to be detained by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) following a brawl, have been released afterwards.

DU Proctor Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani confirmed the news to Banglanews.

RAB released them around 12:00am Friday (March 23), he said.

The students are—Kazi Tanvir, Health secretary of Bijoy Ekattor Hall Chhatra League unit, Imran Hossain, Organizing secretary of Surya Sen Hall unit Chhatra League and Muslim Uddin Himel, an HSC student at Mohammadpur Central College.

Several DU students told Banglanews that the trio were on a bike. A RAB vehicle hit their bike on the road. They asked the driver to come out of the vehicle and later broke the looking glass after being not responded.

A number of 10-12 uniformed RAB members beat them up at gunpoint, after getting off the vehicle.

Being informed, students of the varsity became enraged and obstructed vehicular movement on the road near the campus. They vandalized several vehicles bound to different routes.

RAB-10 Additional DIG Shahabuddin Khan said that the incident happened following a misunderstanding.

“A team of us was heading for Elephant Road from Kantabon in a vehicle devoid of sticker. Several bikers engaged in a scuffle with the team and broke a glass of the vehicle, over giving side on the road”, he said.

Being asked, the bikers introduced themselves as DU students and said that they didn’t know that it was a RAB vehicle, added the DIG.

None was detained over the incident and some senior RAB members from Elephant Road went to the spot to solve the matter, after being informed. They solved the matter through discussion with the varsity proctor, added DIG Shahabuddin Khan.
