BIMSTEC can play role of alternative dev org: FM Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali addressing the conference

DHAKA: Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said that BIMSTEC can function as an alternative organization for development of the south and south-east Asian countries. 

The minister was addressing a conference marking 20 years of founding BIMSTEC at the secretariat Tuesday (March 20).

“BIMSTEC countries trade only 7 percent among themselves which can be uplifted into 21 percent. The countries can work as boosters to develop the regions through investment and exchanging fuel”, said Mahmood Ali.  
 
BIMSTEC Director General Ambassador Md Shahidul Islam, in his keynote speech, said the organization is working as a bridge among the south and south-east Asian countries and contributing incomparably.   

Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj sent her speech to the conference where she said BIMSTEC is a committed organization to improve the life standards of one-fifth people of the world.

BIMSTEC President Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Professor Dr Chop Lal Bhusal said that the nations of this region would be benefited from BIMSTEC.   

BIMSTEC, launched in 1997, stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi- Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation and the grouping comprises seven countries, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
