5 killed as lightning strike ignites fire in Sylhet

SYLHET: Five persons including a mother and her son were killed in a fire originated from a gas riser at their colony, following a lightning strike in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet.

The deceased are—Sebu Begum, 22, Taskima Begum, 30, Tahmid, 2, Sebul, 16 and an unidentified boy aged 16.

Two of the deceased were pregnant, said Sylhet fire service deputy assistant director Dinbemoni Sharma.    

The fire erupted from a gas riser installed in the colony during a lightning strike early Sunday (March 18), said police and firefighters quoting the locals.

The fire engulfed the colony immediately, leaving the five persons killed and two others injured, they added.
 
On information, two units of fire service Sylhet station rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.

The bodies were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsies, said Golapganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Fazlul Haque. 

The injured are undergoing treatment at the same hospital, he added.
