Finance Ministry to take pragmatic steps on banking sector

DHAKA: Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said the Finance ministry will take practical steps to fix the corruption in the country’s banking sector.

He made the remark while addressing as chief guest at a workshop on ‘Expansion and simplification of ready-made garment industry’ in city’s CIRDAP center on Tuesday noon (February 20).

The minister said banking sector is now at risk globally. India suffered similar problems. All countries have to take effective measures on this.

“We will take useful and realistic steps on this matter. Cases were filed in all of the incidents that happened in Bangladesh. Many of the accused have already faced Anti-Corruption Commission investigation and many have landed in jail. We are not excluding anyone involved in corruption.”

Tofail also said businessmen do trade with bank loans and the advancement of our industries happened because of loans. We just have to watch out whether Banks are giving loans to eligible people and taking pay back accordingly.

Some Bangladeshis name already came up in the Panama and Paradise papers for laundering money to offshore safe heavens.

In response to this matter, the minister said ACC and concerned agencies are investigating the matter. People who laundered money will face trial.
