DHAKA: As part of the repatriation process, Myanmar has to take back 8,032 registered Rohingyas within two months, following an agreement made between Bangladesh and Myanmar in a bilateral meeting Friday (February 16).

The list of the 8,032 Rohingyas was handed over to Myanmar delegation led by their Home Minister Lieutenant General Kyaw Swe, during the ministerial level meeting between Bangladesh and Myanmar held in Dhaka.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal led the Bangladesh delegation.

A foreign ministry official, who attended the meeting, told Banglanews that they (Myanmar) have to start the repatriation process after scrutinizing the list within two months, following the agreement made between the two countries.

“It was stated clearly in the list that the Rohingyas should be taken back within two months after getting the list”, said the official.

“As many as 11 lakh Rohingyas are living in Bangladesh at present. Myanmar has been given a list of 8,032 registered Rohingyas. The list includes as many as1,673 families”, he added.

“After receiving the list there is no scope to reshuffling time till indefinite period. But it was observed while analyzing the history that Myanmar doesn’t keep their commitment regarding the issue. They agree on everything in the meetings but forget after exiting the room”, the official said about Myanmar’s dilly-dallying regarding the repatriation process.

However, senior officials of both the countries were also present in the Friday meeting.
