DHAKA: The office of the UN secretary general expressed hope that Bangladesh will reach into an environment to hold a free and fair election.
UN Secretary General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in the UN regular press release on Friday (February 16) that UN expresses concern about the situation ahead of polls in Bangladesh.
While he was reported about the conviction of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and asked whether UN Secretary General has initiated any action, Dujarric replied: “I think, as you know, we have said that we're following this situation very closely. We've expressed our concern and we would hope that the… like in any country, a… this is our principal position, that a climate could be created where free and fair elections could take place.”
He also expressed concerns on Rohingya issue.

However, BNP chairperson was sentenced to five years imprisonment in a graft case and sent to the central jail in old Dhaka on February 8.
