Hearing on CJ appointment’s writ likely Sunday

DHAKA: Hearing on the writ plea, challenging the legality of keeping the post of Chief Justice vacant and seeking court’s directive to appoint a new Chief Justice, is scheduled to be held on Sunday (January 21).

The matter came on the cause list of the Supreme Court. The High Court bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Kazi Md. Izarul Haque is set to hear the writ plea, which is the 8th matter on Sunday’s cause list.

Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond submitted the writ plea on January 03, seeking a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their action keeping the post of Chief Justice vacant and not appointing a new Chief Justice should not be declared illegal.

Secretaries to the cabinet division, president’s office and the law ministry, and prime minister’s principal secretary and registrar general of the Supreme Court had been made respondents to the required rule.

Eunus Ali Akond said that the Chief Justice post cannot be kept vacant even for a day as per the country’s constitution.

The post fell vacant after Justice SK Sinha resigned on November 10 last year.
