DHAKA: The High Court upheld the death sentences given to two accused in a case filed over rape and murder of 7-year-old Alpona Khatun in Maheshpur of Jhenaidah.  

The accused are—Md Saiful Islam and Md Arif Hossain.

An HC bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishnadeb Chakraborty passed the order, after hearing on death reference and jail appeal Thursday (January 18).
 
Attorney General Moniruzzaman Rubel, Assistant Attorney General Abul Kalam Azad Khan Syed Sabina Ahmed and Marufa Akter Sheuli moved for the state while Lawyers SM Shahjahan and Afil Uddin moved for the accused, at the courtroom. 

The accused killed Alpona after raping in Maheshpur of Jhenaidah in 2008, said the Attorney General.

In 2011, a trial court sentenced the two accused to death, in a case filed by the deceased’s father, Torab Ali.
