SAVAR: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar, marking the 47th Victory Day.

They placed the wreaths at the altar of the National Mausoleum at 6:35am Saturday (December 16).

After placing floral wreaths, the president and the premier stood in solemn silence for a while as a mark of deep respect to the memories of the martyrs of the Liberation War of 1971.

A smartly turned out contingent drawn from the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force presented the state salute on the occasion, as bugles played The Last Post.

National Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also paid respect to the martyrs, on behalf of the parliament.

Afterwards, Prime Minister also Awami League President Sheikh Hasina again placed a wreath, accompanying the top leaders of her party.

However, chiefs of the three armed services, MPs, freedom fighters, diplomats, representatives from different political parties, socio-cultural bodies and civil society were among others went to the memorial to pay respect to the war heroes.
