CHITTAGONG: Former Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury died at a private hospital in Chittagong city early Friday (Dec 15).

The veteran politician breathed his last at around 3:00am, while undergoing treatment at Max Hospital in Mehedibag.

He was 74.

Max Hospital Managing Director Dr Liakat Ali Khan told Banglanews that Mohiuddin was earlier kept on life support in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Thursday (Dec 14) as his condition was deteriorating.

Earlier on Nov 11, Mohiuddin was admitted to the same hospital and later airlifted to Square Hospital in Dhaka after he fell sick from heart and kidney related diseases.

On Nov 16, he was taken to a Singapore hospital for better treatment and returned to country safely on Nov 26. He was then admitted to Square Hospital again and went home on Dec 14.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held at Laldighi Maidan, after Asr prayers Friday. 

Afterwards, he will be buried at his family graveyard at Chashma Hill of Sholoshohor area.

Mohiuddin served as CCC Mayor for almost 17 years. He was fondly called as ‘Chottola Bir’ which means the hero of Chittagong. 

Born in Dec 1, 1944 in Chittagong’s Raozan upazila, Mohiuddin was elected mayor for the first time in 1994. Later, he assumed in the office for more two regimes.

He also served as the president of Chittagong metropolitan unit of Awami League.
