`Myanmar committing war crimes in Rakhine’

DHAKA: US Senator Jeff Markley said that Myanmar government and the military are committed war crimes and ethnic cleansing against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state. The war crimes are still being committee there. The perpetrators have to stand trial for the war crimes, he said.

Jeff Markley made the comments in a meeting with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her official residence ‘Ganabhaban’ in Dhaka on Sunday (November 19).

PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim informed reporters at a press briefing after the meeting.

The US Senator said that basic human rights of Rohingyas were infringed in Rakhine State. He assured that his country will give all necessary support to solve the Rohingya crisis.

Sheikh Hasina in the meeting said that Rohingyas were granted asylum on humanitarian grounds. If they are not taken back, full safety and accommodations will be provided for them, she told the US Senator.

The PM urged international community to mount pressure on Myanmar and implement the recommendations of Kofi Annan Commission.

The eight organizations have urged the UN to send a clear and powerful signal regarding pluralism and the rule of law in Rahkine state and also said failure of Myanmar to act now may result in further human rights violations, possibly amounting to crimes against humanity.
