Don’t use middleman for immigration process

DHAKA: Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam has recommended people to emphasize on safe immigration rather than depending on middlemen in the process.

He came up with the suggestion while addressing as chief guest at a program (exhibiting video series to Bangladeshis willing to migrate) initiated by ILO and USAID at a hotel in city on Thursday afternoon (Nov 2).

ILO and USAID jointly exhibited 4 video episodes so that expatriate workers can protect themselves from human trafficking and torture.

The minister said the government is always in support of the steps taken to ensure the safety of expatriate Bangladeshis. Immigrants play a major role in our economy and we want to support them for safe migration.

“With the growing competitive market, safe immigration is becoming a challenge to all. However, it can be dealt with taking couple of precautionary measures. Everyone should check up their documents before immigration and seek help directly from Ministry for troubles.”

Mentioning that the ministry is always open to help people willing to go abroad, the minister also recommended not going to work overseas with a student visa.

At the program, IOMX chief Tara Dermott said many Bangladeshis often go overseas to work with a tourist, Hajj or student visa while unregistered middlemen help them to do so. Eventually they can’t do what they went to do in the first place and put themselves in peril by becoming victims of human trafficking and torture.

National Program Officer of International Labor Organization (ILO) Rahnuma Salam, ATN Bangla Program Adviser Nawazish Ali Khan, Executive Director of Insidin Bangladesh Masud Ali, Chairman of Migrant Worker Development Program Shakirul Islam and Executive Director of Bangladesh Migrant Women's Workers Association (BOMSA) Sumaiyya Islam also spoke at the event.
