8.9 lakh Rohingyas take shelter in Bangladesh: UNHCR

A total of 8,89,500 Rohingya people have taken refuge in Bangladesh fleeing violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state at the hands of Burmese military from Aug 25, says the United Nations High Commissions for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Myanmar government claimed that Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) conducted attacks on at least 30 police and army patrols on August 25.

Afterwards military stepped up crackdown in Rakhine state triggering Rohingyas to migrate in neighboring Bangladesh.

Thousands of Rohingyas started to gather at the no-mans-land area between Myanmar and Bangladesh. At some point they started to cross the border and the influx in still ongoing.

Due to the recent violence, a total of 5.82 lakh new Rohingyas arrived in Bangladesh whereas some 3,07,500 Rohingyas were already staying in here. So, in total 8.9 lakh Rohingyas are currently living in Bangladesh.

Moreover, thousands have died in the long trail of exodus and many are affected by various types of disease.

UNHCR are helping Rohingyas with accommodation and sanitation, food, pure drinking water, and medicine. A total of 182 UNHCR staffs are working in Rohingya camps of Cox’s Bazar.
