DHAKA: The High Court has released the full text of its verdict that commuted the death sentence of Oishee Rahman to life time imprisonment in a case filed over killing her parents.

An HC bench comprising Justices Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice M Jahangir Hossain, who passed the verdict earlier, released the 78-page long full verdict on Sunday (Oct 22).

Earlier on June 5, the HC commuted Oishee’s capital punishment given by trial court to life imprisonment, after hearing the death reference and appeal. Moreover, her Tk 20,000 fine was also commuted to Tk 5,000. 

Oishee’s lawyer Sujit Chatargee Bappi said, following the release of the full verdict, Oishee will move for an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) against the HC verdict.

Earlier on Aug 16 in 2013, police recovered the wounded bodies of Oishee’s parents (Police Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman) from their own apartment room in City’s Malibag area. On the next day, Oishee, along with their house maid Sumi, surrendered in Ramna police station. 

On March 9 in 2014, DB police inspector Abul Khaer submitted two seperate the charge-sheets in Dhaka’s CMM court accusing Oishee Rahman and her two male friends (Mizanur Rahman Roni and Asaduzzaman Jony). On the other hand, trial of the underage housemaid is underway at a children court.

On Nov 12 in 2015, Judge of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Sayed Ahmed sentenced death penalty to Oishee and also fined Tk 20,000, in default, one more year in jail. The other convicts were given different jail sentences. 

The death reference reached the High Court seven days after the verdict on Nov 19. The HC then accepted appeal of Oishee for hearing.

The HC finally commuted her death penalty to life in prison considering a medical report that stated her as mentally ill.
